Load transportation through Europe by car

Are your suppliers or buyers in Europe and this is the reason why you need to transport, from time to time, the goods there or to receive them? It is obvious that the best solution would be to find a reliable transportation company to which you could trust «turnkey » transportation.
However, you should know something about the peculiarities of the freight traffic in Europe: this will help to avoid misunderstandings both with the carrier (transportation company) and with your foreign partners.

One of the advantages of this direction would be the possibility to plan freight traffic exactly: it is less probable that unforeseen events will occur, as the roads in Europe are maintained in an excellent state and the road services work precisely. Due to the presence of the autobahns, the transportation can move quickly almost on all the territory of Europe. The lack of internal borders between the majority of the European countries and the simplified customs control at frontier passages help to optimize the term of delivery.

But, as for every plus there is a minus, the strict control of the technical state of the trucks, the compliance with the traffic rules require from the drivers the observance of the driving regime (after several hours of uninterrupted work, they should rest for some hours). All the data concerning the traffic are recorded by a tachograph – a device installed in all the transports that carry goods on the territory of Europe. Therefore, the supervisers-carriers that regulate freight traffic from and to Europe are required to calculate the time and the distance: a long-term idle-time can occur if they plan this incorrectly (for example, the driver finished his hours of service on Friday, he didn’t reach only some ten kilometres up to the destination for loading the goods and he is forced to stay up to Monday).

How to optimize the delivery- European countries: advice for customers

How can you, as a customer, help the carrier (shipping company) to realize your order? Communicate the quantity and the weight of the load clearly, especially if it will be a part in a groupage transportation of assorted lading. Get more accurate information about the hours of service of the warehouse for loading and unloading: all the European companies work strictly according to the interior order. Besides that, many warehouses work on shortened workdays. You should remember about holidays, too. If the solution when you call the partners from CIS countries and ask them not to close the warehouse because “our car is aleready near”, unfortunately, it doesn’t sensibilize the European shippers and consignees.

One more important moment: find out and prepare all the transportation documents for the load in advance. Remember: carrier’s task is to ensure the presence of the transportation documents for the load, and everything that is related to the cargo represents customer’s liability. That’s why it’s worth specifying which certificates, medical and veterinary documents for the cargo are necessary. The idle time that could appear if the car is stopped for any check-up will not be convenient for you.

Why freight traffic in Europe is more expensive than in other directions?

Many customers are surprised that the cost of the transportation from the European countries is more expensive than a similar service provided in CIS countries, for example. Of course, everybody would like to calculate the freight taking in consideration only the distance, but this is impossible. Which are the factors that influence the rise in price of the European transportation?
Firstly, only modern cars can drive through European countries, as they satisfy certain requirements. For example, nowadays, these are haulage trucks of a standard not less than Euro 4. The cost of such a vehicle fleet and the expenses for its maintainance are considerable. These expenses, at their turn, influence uniformly the price for the transportation services.

Secondly, the majority of the European roads are payable. The payment for the roads is included in the cost of one kilometer tripped in Europe.

Thirdly, the set of documents that is necessary to ensure cargo transportation on the territory of Europe includes expensive CEMT certificates or “permissions” that allow passing through different countries. The issuance of the visas needs certain expenses, too.

Fourthly, the costs for the fuel are reflected on freight and cargo transportation price.  As it is well known, they are more expensive in Europe than in Moldova, and the car must pass at least two thirds of the distance with European fuel. Thus, it is not so grave: a competent carrier knows a lot of methods to save funds on transportation. First of all, he will do this on the account of a conveniently planned itinerary and of a clear displacement-time diagram. One more advantage of the transportation through Europe is the possibility to make up assorted lading; it is the situation where goods for 3-15 customers are delivered by one car. Such transportation requires, of course, a professional approach of the traffic controllers and drivers, but they allow to the customers to pay only for his load, proportionally to the total loading. We hope that you will find that we are a reliable carrier and the delivery of goods through Europe will seem to you a simple an inexpensive thing.
